Bedan Adrian Gomez Makes his Bid for Assessor of Los Angeles County this June 8th Primary Election

In today's economic crisis, politics as usual has no place in the manner we do business in county government. The office of the Los Angeles County Assessor has a challenging task in the years ahead. Department outsiders are no match to a career Assessor candidate who has meritoriously moved up the ranks during his 25 years of service and has been involved in every step of the way during these changing times. His experience, from his earlier days with the Assessor's office, working on properties in the Antelope, Santa Clarita and San Fernando valleys to the multi-million dollar properties in the westside communities of Beverly Hills, Malibu, Bel-Air, Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica and to commercial industrial properties in the Northwest corridor of the county brings the much needed experience to the office resulting in accurate and timely property assessments to all taxpayers. Born in Manila, Philippines in 1948, Adrian came to the US in 1949 with his parents and older sister. Life was difficult then for immigrants from the Far East which led to his parents’ divorce and his return to the Philippines five years later. Adrian’s elementary education took place at private catholic schools at St. Theresa’s and Lourdes, his high school and college education at San Beda College and post graduate studies at De La Salle College. After graduation, he worked at the Makati Stock Exchange and Qantas Airways before coming back to the US in 1975. Adrian worked in the private sector in a firm with contracts with Los Angeles County. He subsequently owned a similar firm with branches located in Norwalk and Bellflower. He later decided to pursue a career as a Los Angeles County Appraiser in 1985. He is currently the Principal Appraiser in the North District office of Los Angeles County. Over the years, he has been involved with Filipino American associations. He was the first President of the Filipino-American Association of Santa Clarita in 1984, President of the San Beda Alumni Association of Southern California in 2003 and 2006. In 2003, he established the "PORT,” meaning, Pulling Our Resources Together, program for the San Beda, Holy Spirit and Fil-Am Association of Santa Clarita. This program offers Filipino Americans FREE access to services, information and resources which are normally not available or difficult to obtain. The program has resulted in assisting fellow Filipino Americans and their friends find jobs, save on taxes and participate in counseling on immigration and marital issues. He continues to this day as coordinator of this program as it spreads its wings to other associations. Further, he and his wife Ellen have worked on the sponsorships of three Gawad Kalinga villages in the Philippines. As Los Angeles County Assessor, Adrian’s mission is as follows: · to serve all taxpayers by ensuring complete, accurate, timely, fair and equitable assessment of all property subject to taxation in accordance with applicable statutes and regulations with an emphasis on providing excellent public service. · to work cooperatively as a team in creating a challenging and rewarding work environment. · to utilize education and training to refine and update our skills, knowledge and database. · to welcome all citizen inquiries professionally and courteously and assist property owners in understanding the Assessment Process. · to ensure fair employment practices. · to uphold Prop. 13 and other property tax related propositions passed by the California legislature. · to expand proactive Prop. 8 assessment reduction to include sales in the late 80s and early 90s for properties in depressed areas of the county. · to improve the Property Data Base of the department to make it more interactive and with more application to the appraisers and support staff. · to continue to propose legislation to lower property taxes for everyone and more importantly for the elderly and the handicapped. · to continue to be a champion and true believer of affirmative action, in its real definition, in the workplace. Red Lions capture 3rd consecutive crown

SAN BEDA COLLEGE displayed its deadly form to retain the National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball title Monday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Two-time Most Valuable Player Sam Ekwe of Nigeria scored 21 points on top of 19 rebounds as the Red Lions outclassed the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers 85-69 for their third straight crown.

The 6’8” Ekwe joined hand with pro-bound Pong Escobal, Ogie Menor and rookie Jake Pascual to give San Beda a 64-48 lead at the end of the third quarter.

“We came out soft in Game 2. Now we started strongly. I told the boys before the game to play good defense and always play as a team,” said coach Frankie Lim

San Beda won Game 1 (72-68) but Jose Rizal bounced back in Game 2 (62-60) to force the rubbermatch.

“We were able to limit their shooters particularly Nocom [Jayson], Hayes [Marvin] and Wilson [John]. And that what really stopped the game of JRU,” added Lim, a member of the Red Lions that won back-to-back titles in 1977 and 1978.

San Beda now has 14 titles, including three straight from 1934 to 1937, to tie the record of San Sebastian College. Letran has 16 titles.

“We played well and we really worked hard for this game. No one can take this victory from us. I thank all including the San Beda family for their support,” said Ekwe, who was also voted as Finals best player.

The six-time champion Jose Rizal, seeking to end a 36-year title drought, had a sluggish start that allowed San Beda to take a 9-4 lead which ballooned to 14-6 on Jay-Arr Taganas’ two free throws, 3:51 left in the first period.

While Ekwe and Menor continued to dominate the shaded lane, the Red Lions kept their 9-point lead at the half.

The Red Lions sustained their momentum in the third quarter with Menor, Pascual and Escobal scoring back-to-back baskets.

Menor finished with 18 points and 8 rebounds while Pascual and Escobal contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively.

James Sena led the Heavy Bombers with 24 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists while Marc Cagoco chipped in 16 points. Cameroon’s Nchotu John Njei had 8 points.
